Become a Successful Designer af An easy-to-understand guide for designers on the legal topics that deeply affect their everyday professional activities, Become a Successful Designer provides designers with ways to protect and handle their intellectual property rights. The authors Joachim Kobuss, Alexander Bretz and Arian Hassani explain the legal framework and the possibilities to act in that field from a completely new point of view. The law and its effects on the individual designer are described in the context of designers' everyday practice. Here, the legal aspects of design do not appear in incomprehensible legalese but are rather shown as a strategic instrument for designers which can be fun to handle. Making Design Theory af A new approach to theory development for practice-driven research, proposing that theory is something made in and through design. Tendencies toward "academization" of traditionally practice-based fields have forced design to articulate itself as an academic discipline, in theoretical terms. In this book, Johan Redström offers a new approach to theory development in design research-one that is driven by practice, experimentation, and making. Redström does not theorize from the outside, but explores the idea that, just as design research engages in the making of many different kinds of things, theory might well be one of those things it is making. Redström proposes that we consider theory not as stable and constant but as something unfolding--something acted as much as articulated, inherently fluid and transitional. Redström describes three ways in which theory, in particular formulating basic definitions, is made through design: the use of combinations of fluid terms to articulate issues; the definition of more complex concepts through practice; and combining sets of definitions made through design into "programs." These are the building blocks for creating conceptual structures to support design. Design seems to thrive on the complexities arising from dichotomies: form and function, freedom and method, art and science. With his idea of transitional theory, Redström departs from the traditional academic imperative to pick a side--theory or practice, art or science. Doing so, he opens up something like a design space for theory development within design research.
The Aesthetics of Imagination in Design af A theoretically informed investigation that relates the philosophies of aesthetics and imagination to understanding design practice. In The Aesthetics of Imagination in Design, Mads Folkmann investigates design in both material and immaterial terms. Design objects, Folkmann argues, will always be dual phenomena--material and immaterial, sensual and conceptual, actual and possible. Drawing on formal theories of aesthetics and the phenomenology of imagination, he seeks to answer fundamental questions about what design is and how it works that are often ignored in academic research. Folkmann considers three conditions in design: the possible, the aesthetic, and the imagination. Imagination is a central formative power behind the creation and the life of design objects; aesthetics describes the sensual, conceptual, and contextual codes through which design objects communicate; the concept of the possible--the enabling of new uses, conceptions, and perceptions--lies behind imagination and aesthetics. The possible, Folkmann argues, is contained as a structure of meaning within the objects of design, which act as part of our interface with the world. Taking a largely phenomenological perspective that reflects both continental and American pragmatist approaches, Folkmann also makes use of discourses that range from practice-focused accounts of design methodology to cultural studies. Throughout, he offers concrete examples to illustrate theoretical points. Folkmann's philosophically informed account shows design--in all its manifestations, from physical products to principles of organization--to be an essential medium for the articulation and transformation of culture.
Sketching User Experiences af Sketching User Experiences approaches design and design thinking as something distinct that needs to be better understood--by both designers and the people with whom they need to work-- in order to achieve success with new products and systems. The Design Way af A book that lays out the fundamental concepts of design culture and outlines a design-driven way to approach the world. Humans did not discover fire--they designed it. Design is not defined by software programs, blueprints, or font choice. When we create new things--technologies, organizations, processes, systems, environments, ways of thinking--we engage in design. Reading Design is an online archive of critical writing about design. The idea is to embrace the whole of design, from architecture and urbanism to product, fashion, graphics and beyond. The texts featured here date from the nineteenth century right up to the present moment but each one contains something which remains relevant, surprising or interesting to us today.
